Griffith High’s junior rugby union team recently won the state-wide Fester Shield. The final 26-0 victory against Singleton HS was the culmination of months of competition against teams from around the state. The final was played in Singleton on Monday 15th October. After defeating Kooringal HS in the Riverina final the team has also played schools from Dubbo and Illawarra. Coach Craig Wirth claims they were by far the strongest team throughout the competition.
The team was coached by Peter Burton, Craig Wirth and managed by Murray Jones. The team also received tremendous support from player’s families, many local businesses and NSW Rugby Union who also contributed financially. Manager Muray Jones said generous community support has made it possible for the team to compete and the boys have responded on the field.
In the final, an enthusiastic Griffith team started the game with great intensity and dominated their much larger opponents. Some of the key players included Andrew Lavaka, Ian Jackson, Gary Warburton, Jarrod Williams and Morgan Jones. By half time the team had secured a 12-0 lead, and through rugged defense, ball security and running rugby the team managed to pile on another 14 second-half points. The team demonstrated attacking flair through ball-players such as Shaun Dutton, David Latu and Tevita Mahe with winger Mark Smith making several long breaks up the sideline. The Singleton team was kept scoreless throughout the game, largely through stout defensive efforts contributed by Jarrod Williams, Nathan Jackson and Naseri Naseri.
The pack, led by second-rowers Brett Phillips and Ben Kocaj, ensured that Singleton HS were shutdown and contained in their own half, rarely touching the ball. In the sixth minute of the game, hooker Gary Warburton darted over for the first try of the game after breaking from a rolling maul and sprinting the last five metres to the line. The try was not converted.
The Griffith High team continued to maintain a great deal of pressure on Singleton HS, through a high work rate, making very few mistakes and rarely turning the ball over. This patient approach was again rewarded in the eighteenth minute from a scrum with flanker Ian Jackson breaking copious tackles to score against a visibly tiring Singleton team. Ian converted his own try for a 12-0 score-line which remained unchanged to halftime.
The Singleton team started the second half full of vigor and pinned Griffith HS in their own half for the first five minutes. After fighting their way back into a scoring position, second five-eight, Nathan Jackson scored from a quickly taken penalty. The try was converted by his brother Ian, for a 19-0 score-line. Griffith HS continued to play a running style of rugby through their outside backs Rhys Newman and Mark Smith. Enjoying a wealth of possession, the Griffith team capitalised by constantly attacking the Singleton defensive line. These tactics were rewarded when speedy winger Dion Forrester crossed unopposed out side. The try was converted for a final 26-0 score-line.
In the games leading up to the final, Bye Round 1, Kooringal HS were defeated 91-0, St. Johns Dubbo 20-5 and Illawarrra Sports HS 22-15. The final for and against tally was an impressive 159-20.
The team consists of: Ian Jackson (captain), Daniel Jackson, Nathan Jackson, Dion Forrestor, Andrew Lavaka, Shaun Dutton, Phillip Funaki, David Latu, Tevita Mahe, Naseri Naseri, Jarrod Williams, Morgan Jones, Ben Kocaj, Rhys Newman, Brett Phillips, Gary Warburton, Cameron Gillett, Mark Smith, Mathew Johnson and Scott Wall.

12 YEARS GIRLS 4x100 METRES RELAY TEAM
From left: Maree Trembath, Laura Dall'est, Qivi Seavula and Sarah Dossetor
Finishing 20 metres ahead of their nearest rivals, Griffith High School's 12 years 4x100 metres relay team has taken out the NSW Combined High Schools State title held at the CHS Athletics Championships in Homebush. The team of Qivi Seavula, Sarah Dossettor, Maree Trembath and Laura Dall'est were favourites for the final after breaking the NSW record for the event in the heats. Running 53.51 seconds, the team broke the existing record of 53.82 seconds and won their heat by a margin of 40 metres. They then went on to blitz their rivals again in the final to claim gold. The girls have trained twice a week for the past two months and their committment has paid off with their outstanding achievement. Special thanks to the girls' coaches Richard Turner and Skeet Milne.

GIRLS U15 TOUCH TEAM
The Griffith High School Under 15 girls touch side has taken out the State Championship, defeating Kiama 3-2 in a close final in Sydney. Trailing 3-1 with a minute to go Kiama scored, but the Griffith girls stayed strong in defence to secure the title.
Griffith made the State finals after taking out the Regional competition in Wagga, winning all seven games and defeating Mount Erin 3-2 in the final. The State finals had the 16 regional champions from around NSW competing for the title, with Griffith drawn in a pool with Glendale, Narrabri and Woolooware. The first match against Glendale was a slow affair, with the early start and nerves playing a role. Griffith won the match 1-0 in less than confident fashion. The second game was a contrast to the first, with the Griffith side producing penetrating attack and stoic defence to defeat Narrabri 9-1. With the top two sides in each pool going through to the quarter finals, the match against Woolooware would decide who finished in first and second positions. Griffith struggled in defence and went down 3-2 despite threatening with the ball in hand.
The quarter final against one of the favourites for the title, Port Hacking, was an exciting affair. Griffith was down 2-0 early but produced some excellent attack to draw even. A try with three minutes to go to Port Hacking put the Griffith side under pressure, but with less than a minute remaining Griffith scored again to equalise. The full time score remained 3-3 and the sides prepared for the five on five drop off. Griffith had to defend several consecutive sets of six before being able to attack the Port Hacking line. With both sides reduced to four players Rosalyn Simpson beat two defenders to run 30 metres to score the winning try which put Griffith into the semi final.
The semi final against Saint Pauls again saw Griffith down 1-0 early until the side lifted to dominate in both attack and defence. Having lost both Laura Dall'est and Racheal Best due to injury, the remaining players had to overcome fatigue to hold out the attack of Saint Pauls. Renae McCanna and Shailyn Williams combined to put Griffith ahead 2-1, and the defence was exceptional as the side held out numerous attacking raids to advance to the final.
The State championship final saw Griffith facing a confident Kiama side, which had defeated both Woolooware and another favourite, Kincumber, on the way to the final. With both sides coming through tough matches, fatigue was always going to be a deciding factor. Kiama continued the trend of teams scoring first against Griffith to take an early lead. The Griffith attack was relentless, the mobility and quick dumps of Maree Trembath, Sarah Wade, Ronisi Nawai and Sarah Dossetor laying the platform for Williams, McCanna and Simpson to capitalise. Griffith took a 2-1 lead midway through the match, and then with the Kiama side attacking the wings, Chelsea Kirby, Qivi Seavula and Jeni Robertson held strong and kept their opponents out. With three minutes remaining Griffith stretched the lead to 3-1. Strong attack from Kiama was held out until the final minute when Kiama took the score to 3-2. The remaining time saw Kiama lose the ball in sight of the line and Griffith maintained possion until the final siren.
The Griffith side produced some excellent performances to not only reach the final 16 but to go on to take out the State Championship. With more than 300 schools from the public, private and independent systems involved, it was a fantastic effort from the Griffith side.
